Can’t Sleep With a CPAP Machine?
If you have sleep apnea and struggle to use a CPAP machine, you are not alone. Many people find CPAP uncomfortable, noisy, or hard to use every night. There is another option.
Inspire therapy is a simple treatment that works inside your body to help you breathe while you sleep. There is no mask, no hose, and no loud machine. Just quiet, more natural sleep.
At CoxHealth, our team is proud to be one of the first Inspire Centers of Excellence in the United States.
What is Inspire Therapy?
Inspire therapy is a treatment for sleep apnea that helps you breathe normally while you sleep — without a mask or hose. It works inside your body using a small device placed under the skin in your chest. While you sleep, the device helps keep your airway open so you can rest more comfortably. Before bed, you simply turn the device on with a small handheld remote.
No mask. No hose. Just better sleep.
How does Inspire Therapy Work?
When you fall asleep, your muscles relax. For people with sleep apnea, the tongue can relax too much and block the airway. Inspire therapy works with your body to help prevent this.
While you sleep, the device senses each breath you take. It sends gentle signals that move the tongue slightly forward. This helps keep your airway open so you can breathe more easily and sleep more soundly.
Before bed, you turn the therapy on with a small handheld remote.
Who Is Inspire Therapy For?
Inspire therapy may be an option if CPAP has not worked for you and you are looking for a different way to treat sleep apnea.
You may qualify if you:
• Are 18 or older
• Have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea
• Have an apnea-hypopnea index between 15 and 100
• Have tried CPAP but cannot tolerate it
• Have a BMI under 40 (for most insurance plans)
Inspire therapy may also help some patients ages 12–18 with Down syndrome who still have sleep apnea after tonsil and adenoid removal.
