Breast Pumping

Breast pumping is not meant to replace breastfeeding, but it plays an important role for many mothers, especially those returning to work or who cannot breastfeed directly. Choosing the right pump is an important decision that depends on how often you'll use it, your lifestyle, and your budget.

What to consider when choosing a pump

Think about cost (including batteries or power sources), how often you'll pump, effectiveness, ease of use, and comfort. Our Women's Center in Springfield carries quality Medela breast pumps and can help guide you to the right choice.

Keep in mind that inexpensive pumps may not create enough suction — producing little or no milk — or may create too much suction, causing discomfort and pain. Lower-cost pumps also tend to break down more often than higher-quality models.

Types of Breast Pumps

  • Hand Pumps

Inexpensive and portable. Pumps one side at a time, with power supplied manually. Best for occasional, on-the-go use.

  • Single Electric Pumps

Small battery or electric pumps that work on one breast at a time. Suitable for occasional or supplemental use.

  • Double-Electric Pumps

Pump both breasts simultaneously. Ideal for working moms or anyone who needs to pump frequently and efficiently.

Insurance Breast Pumps

Almost all insurance companies cover a double-electric breast pump at no cost to you. We encourage you to check with your insurance company during pregnancy to see what options are available to you.
